Crape yarn
Crape yarn is polyester filament yarn given a very high twist, so that the woven fabric shrinks and puckers into the grainy, matt crepe or georgette surface. We twist it ourselves at our factory in Kim, near Surat, and supply it to weavers on cones.
Made at our factory in Kim, Surat district.

How we make it
We start from polyester filament yarn and twist it on our own machines at Kim until it carries the turns per metre a crepe fabric needs. The yarn is then set so that it stays stable on the cone and in the warp or weft, and only shows its crinkle once the fabric is finished.
Because the twisting is done in our own factory, we control the twist level, the direction (S or Z) and the setting, and we can keep a quality the same from one lot to the next. Weavers who come back for the same count get the same yarn.
Which counts
Our regular crape qualities are semi-dull (SD) polyester, such as 50/48 SD crape and 75/72 SD crape. The first number is the denier, the thickness of the yarn; the second is the number of filaments in it. Other deniers and twist levels can be made to order.
What weavers use it for
Crape yarn goes into georgette, chiffon-like and crepe fabrics: sarees, dupattas, dress material and kurta fabrics, the staple of Surat's looms. Finer counts give a lighter, more fluid fabric; heavier counts give body and drape.
