FDY, POY and DTY explained

POY (partially oriented yarn) is spun but not fully drawn, so it is mostly used as feed for texturising. FDY (fully drawn yarn) is spun and drawn in one step into a flat, smooth, lustrous yarn for weaving. DTY (draw-textured yarn) is POY drawn and crimped, which gives it bulk and stretch.

POY: the starting point

Polyester chips or melt are spun at high speed into filaments that are only partly stretched. POY is not yet stable enough to weave well, so most of it goes to texturising machines, where it becomes DTY, or to draw-twisting.

FDY: flat and smooth

FDY is drawn fully as it is spun, so the filaments lie straight and parallel. It is smooth, strong and has a clean lustre, especially in bright. It is used for satin, linings, sarees, dress material and as the base for crape twisting.

DTY: bulk and stretch

DTY is POY that has been drawn and false-twisted over a heater. The filaments keep a crimp, so the yarn is fuller, softer and stretches. It is the workhorse yarn for sarees, dress material, knits and blends.

Which should I ask for?

For a flat, shiny or very fine fabric, FDY. For softness, cover and stretch, DTY. Tell us the fabric and loom and we will suggest a count and lustre.
