Storing yarn through the monsoon
Keep cartons closed, off the floor on pallets and away from walls, in a dry, airy godown, and use the oldest stock first. Polyester takes up very little moisture, but viscose and cotton absorb much more, so they are the ones most at risk of mildew, weight change and weak spots.

Why the monsoon matters
Polyester has a moisture regain of well under one percent, so it barely changes. Viscose takes up more than ten percent, and cotton several percent. In a humid godown those yarns gain weight, can grow mildew and may run differently on the loom.
In the godown
Stack cartons on pallets, not on the floor, and leave a gap from walls so air moves. Keep the roof and windows tight against leaks, and do not stack wet cartons.
On the cone
Leave cones in their cartons and polythene until they are needed. Open cartons attract dust and damp, and a soiled outer layer shows in the fabric.
First in, first out
Mark each carton with its lot and date, and use the oldest first. Matching lots also keeps shade and dyeing consistent across a run.
